Linden and Smithville Then and Now (Linden Heights/Hearthstone)

May 28, 2021 By Andrew Walsh Leave a Comment

One of our recent articles took a look at the history of the Belmont business district including some then and now photos of the intersection of Smithville Road and Watervliet Ave.

Today we will stay on Smithville but travel about a mile north to another major intersection that straddles the neighborhoods of Hearthstone and Linden Heights: Linden and Smithville.

The below image was taken in 1958 and shows Linden looking east towards Smithville. The main business visible is Allen Drugs which was found at 1401 South Smithville.

As we saw with our previous article, this intersection too has seen widened roads and the loss of older structures which had represented an earlier, more walkable era. Today, on the other side of Linden is a strip mall and just north of the intersection one will find ramps for highway 35.

Like Smithville, Linden Ave cuts through numerous neighborhoods and just west of this location it veers off and travels northwest all the way to Third Street (TALS corner) and the beautiful Third and Linden Market Building. The Linden Davis Building is another prominent structure along the way that we’ve written about.
