About

Welcome! My name is Andrew Walsh. I’m the author of Lost Dayton, Ohio and my research focuses on urban history, architecture, preservation, and urban redevelopment.

Articles on this website cover historic Dayton buildings, both lost and saved; industries and businesses from Dayton’s heyday; current redevelopment projects in the city core; and related issues, from urban planning to historic preservation, where the past intersects with our present and future.

To get started, head to my Browse Articles page to explore articles by topic, see direct links to some of my favorites, and see what I’ve written about particular neighborhoods:

My book Lost Dayton, Ohio was published in 2018 by The History Press. Since then I’ve given a wide variety of talks and presentations and have led numerous walking tours of historic Downtown Dayton and surrounding neighborhoods.

I record Dayton history videos, which you can see on my YouTube channel.

I also post on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and more (links at the top of this page).

Finally, you can sign up to my Dayton History Newsletter using your email below. You’ll get updates on my new content and be the first to hear about my speaking events, walking tours, and new book projects.

I first created this website in 2018. I liked the connotations of the word vista, which suggests a pleasing view but can also mean a “comprehensive mental view of a series of remembered or anticipated events.”

From the beginning Dayton Vistas has featured a wide variety of images shot in Dayton, both historic and contemporary, alongside reflections about the city’s history as well as what it is doing today to reinvent itself.

My book explores a diverse selection of retail, industrial, entertainment and residential sites from Dayton's disappearing legacy.
