The word vista means a pleasing view, but it also can mean a “comprehensive mental view of a series of remembered or anticipated events.” Dayton Vistas features quite a few images shot in Dayton (both historic and contemporary), but also longer reflections about the city’s history as well as what it is doing today to reinvent itself.
This can include articles about historic Dayton buildings, either lost or saved; glimpses at industries and businesses of Dayton’s past; updates on new developments in the city core and their implications; and profiles of popular cultural destinations in Dayton today, often with a look at their sites’ past.

I’m Andrew Walsh and I’m an author and academic librarian living in Dayton’s Oregon District. My interest in local history began shortly after I moved to Dayton when I was curious about the area surrounding my then apartment in the Dayton Towers. As I began to research, I quickly became fascinated by a city that was once a major powerhouse, and that still has a lot of fight left despite suffering from crippling losses in recent decades.
My book Lost Dayton, Ohio was published in 2018 by The History Press. Since then I’ve been an invited speaker at the Engineers Club of Dayton, the Dayton Bicycle Club, PechaKucha Dayton, Dayton Metro Library, and more. Get in touch if you’re interested in having me speak to your organization, company, or other group.
